Kalimat aktif (active) adalah penulisan kalimat yang menempatkan pelaku kegiatan sebagai subjek kalimat. Secara umum ditulis dengan pola dasar berikut:
Subject + (Aux) + Verb + ObjectSebaliknya, kalimat pasif (passive) adalah penulisan kalimat yang menempatkan korban/penerima kegiatan sebagai subjek kalimat. Berdasarkan pola kalimat aktif di atas, maka rumusan kalimat pasif adalah sebagai berikut:

Aux = auxiliary verb (kata kerja bantu, bisa terdiri dari 1 atau lebih kata)to be = salah satu dari kata-kata berikut: is, am, are, was, were, been, being, be, to beRumusan di atas mengacu pada rumusan umum yang meliputi berbagai tenses dalam bahasa Inggris. Jadi, penggunaan to be harus disesuaikan dengan kata kerja bantu (auxiliary verb) yang digunakan juga.
Selain itu, untuk tenses dalam bentuk sederhana (simple), penulisan kalimat aktif seringkali tidak menggunakan kata kerja bantu (aux) sehingga bagian itu bisa diabaikan/dihilangkan pada kalimat pasif (passive voice) juga.
